James Upchurch, President and CEO of Forward McDuffie, has been recognized as one of the Top Influencers in Local Government by Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL), a national professional association of public servants and local government professionals.

Each year, ELGL honors 100 standout individuals across the country who are making a meaningful impact in their communities through innovation, leadership, and public service. Upchurch was selected for his work in economic development and his commitment to revitalizing downtown Thomson, creating opportunities for small businesses, and offering guidance to communities across the country.

“Local government is where real change begins,” said Upchurch. “I’m grateful to be recognized by ELGL and proud to represent Thomson and McDuffie County on a national stage. This is really a reflection of the partnerships we’re building and the momentum we’re creating together.”

According to ELGL, Upchurch was nominated by a colleague or peer for his “collaborative, people-first approach,” and for “thinking outside the box and striving to make a positive impact.” ELGL noted that Upchurch has worked in both urban and rural communities, always focused on partnerships that drive real results.

“James cares deeply about people and places,” the organization shared in its announcement. “He’s dedicated to helping communities grow in thoughtful, sustainable ways.”Public Service Recognition Week is celebrated nationally during the first week of May, honoring the work of government employees at all levels.
